Phat Tuesdays was the ground breaking comedy show that changed the culture not only in Los Angeles, but nationally. It literally brought the hood to Hollywood. When the Rodney King verdict was made and chaos ensued in the Los Angeles urban areas, the comedy scene as well as the buildings basically went up in smoke. The entertainment industry elites who came from Hollywood to “da hood” scout talent, stopped. Black A list celebrities as well as comedy fans followed suit. But when the smoke cleared and the dust settled, what came out of those abandoned areas was the little comedy night that could. Guy Torry not only saw the void, but experienced it which lead him to create a comedy show at the World Famous Comedy Store on the Sunset Strip that would help showcase and help launch the careers of some of Hollywoods most sought after talent. The likes of Cedric The Entertainer, Nick Cannon, Kevin Hart, Chris Tucker, Dave Chappelle, Leslie Jones, Luenell, Tiffany Haddish, Katt Williams and many more graced the stage and stars were born. The night was such a phenomenal success that other main stream comedy clubs across the country started modeling nights after "Phat Tuesdays"
This wonderful story was turned into a documentary for Amazon Prime titled “Phat Tuesdays : The Era of Hip Hop Comedy” It was not only just well received by the comedians and fans of comedy, but it just missed being nominated for an Emmy. Critics praised it and the people, well were left wanting more. The docu-series received 100% rating from the famed "Rotten Tomatoes" which is unheard of. In 2022 Essence Magazine asked Guy Torry to curate their comedy shows "Comedy After Dark" at "Essence Festival" and for them to be "Phat Tuesdays" shows. Uptown Magazine saluted it and gave it their prestigious "UPTOWN HONORS" AWARD IN 2023. The "New York Times" called it the "Best Documentary of 2022". The "100 Black Men" foundation of the St. Louis chapter honored Guy Torry because his contribution to the Black Community because of "Phat Tuesdays" . This is a foundation for Guy Torry to help more comedians, provide more laugher and stories specifically in the comedy space because there is certainly more to explore. There were literally thousands of interesting stories that need t o be heard. Guy and his. team are currently taking a Phat Tuesdays styled show out on the road making it an experience to those outside Hollywood.

Before there was a TACO TUESDAYS, comedian Guy Torry created "PHAT TUESDAYS" and Tuesday nights in Hollywood were never the same. GUY TORRY seeing his big brother JOE TORRY on "Def Comedy Jam" was truly the inspiration for him getting into stand-up comedy. Hearing his stories of the famed “Comedy Act Theater” planted seeds of doing his own night to show case Black comedians. When Guy saw the lack of industry presence in a club where they once came to scout talent. Torry molded "Phat Tuesdays" after " Def Comedy Jam" and "The Comedy Act Theatre".
CHRIS TUCKER was a crowd favorite of “PHAT TUESDAYS” from DAY ONE. His high energy and raw style made him likable. He would take the crowd from 0 to 60 in a matter of seconds. He was booked for the hit movie “The 5th Element” from his set at PHAT TUESDAYS when it was in “The Belly Room” He was a staple of “PHAT TUESDAYS” and definitely helped put it on the map. The film furthered blew Chris up and. his acting career took from that.
Cedric was already on his way to destiny when he would visit LA from St. Louis where he and the TORRY’S where from. He would make PHAT TUESDAYS one of his top priorities on his destination list to hit. He was also a crowd favorite at the PT and worked on some of his most classic bits at there. He credits PT for sealing the deal for a few oof his projects. He always showed Guy love by gracing the stage and validated the PHAT TUESDAYS as a night that was top tier.
LUENELL The "PHAT TUESDAYS" audience adored her. She was real, she was raw and she was funny as hell. She was one of the few females who could command that stage. She was also a favorite among comedians because when she live in Oakland, she hosted a public access show and would invite any comedian on to promote their brand and their show. She was and still is one of the most multi-talented comedians male for female.
This kid was coming to "PHAT TUESDAYS" before he was even old enough to vote, drink alcohol or even get drafted into the military. He was young, he was ambitious and he was talented. Guy Torry invited him to perform at "PHAT TUESDAYS" as long as he was accompanied by an adult. Nick Cannon checked all those boxes and was there religiously soaking in all the wisdom and knowledge of the comedy game and ended up getting discovered after one of his sets.
They way JB Smooth milked comedy bits, if he was a farmer, he’d the #1 distributor of milk in the country. No one out squeezes the funny out of a joke than him. JB would have that "PHAT TUESDAYS" crowd in a freenzy. They would laugh uncontrollably and you would have thought that you were at a rave concert they way everybody would jerk back and fourth from laugher. His story telling was epic and his energy was nonstop. he. Would put his foot on the gas and would not let up until he said; “Good Night, I’m JB Smooth”.
“PHAT TUESDAYS” was the comedy night where Black comedians could come and be themselves. Comedians didn’t have to censor themselves like they did In mainstream rooms. That went for those who were also of the Trans and Gay communities as well. PT didn’t judge you by your gender or pronoun even before recognizing those communities were a thing. Flame Monroe found it difficult to get booked in most of the Black ran rooms. “PHAT TUESDAYS played “funny-tism” over favoritism. “Phat Tuesdays” cared more about what you did on stage more than what you were doing in your bedroom as long as it was legal.
RUSSLE PETERS was NOT Black or American. He hails from Canada. He would frequent “The Comedy Store” and was around for PHAT TUESDAYS and witnessed the importance of such a night. He was inspired by. PT and returned to his hometown of Toronto, Canada and launch his own version of “PHAT TUESDAYS” giving comedians there a platform to showcase and hone their comedic sets. In the spirit of PT, he understood. The assignment and remains to one of the most successful and beloved comedians today.
The multi-talented CRAIG ROBINSON who is just as great of musician as he is a comedian. He combined those two gifts and would amused and impress the “PHAT TUESDAYS” audience whenever he performed. He was an enjoyable change of pace from the usual PT comedians. He would captivate that audience and made them appreciate his style of comedy that didn’t disappoint. It made the line-up a more diverse style that made PT different from the usual Black audience.
REGINA KING is NOT a Stand-Up comedian but she IS funny and a HUGE fan of comedy. She frequented “PHAT TUESDAYS” and would bless the night with her presence. She’s an actress who co-starred along side several comedians and would hold her own in any scene with them. She was a crowd favorite as a member of the audience and was one of the many STARS that would attend almost weekly. Comedy fans enjoyed seeing her Ms. King in the audience and appreciated her support of her friend GUY TORRY. A big art of “PHAT TUESDAYS” success was not only the talent on stage, but the talent who was in the house.
LIL REL may not have graced the stage in the “hay day” of “PHAT TUESDAYS”, He did perform at the anniversary show GUY TORRY would produce in 2015 in downtown LOS ANGELES in a bigger venue. Rel Howery was put on Guy’s comedy radar by fellow St. Louisian Terrence Reynolds who used to book the talent for “PHAT TUESDAYS”. REL being a student of the game fit the mode of the type of comedians that performed at “PHAT TUESDAYS”. He continues to perform and release great comedy specials and raise the bar for himself and other comedians.
TIFFANY HADDISH did not perform at “PHAT TUESDAYS” when it was at “The Comedy Store” but she did at one of the 20th Anniversary shows held in downtown LOS ANGELES in 2015. She learned the art of Stand-Up at the “LAUGH FACTORY” right down the street. In West Hollywood. Ms. Haddish used to get fake ID’S because she was too young to attend without the proper adult supervision. Once she was able to get in, she would learn what Black comedy shows were different than anything else out there. She continues to rip audiences as well as in the spirit of “PHAT TUESDAYS” she create her own comedy showcase show titled "THEY READY" on “SHOWTIME” giving a platform to comedians that needed someone of her power to bring attention to those comedians that were over looked.
